Popup – Processing Your Order…

Have you (or rather have your customers) ever noticed a delay when hitting the “do it” button on checkout_confirmation.php ? I have to say that I have never noticed it, but I don’t often buy from osCommerce shops and every test order I make is on my dev server where everything is blazing fast.

One of my long-standing clients sent me this;

…come across a small issue when I hit confirm order on the checkout confirmation page. When I hit the button the button goes a different shade, so it can’t be pressed again which is what should happen, but nothing else happens for a good 3 – 4 seconds. No spooling on the tab bar or anywhere else. It make it look like the page has frozen then the page starts to spool and another few seconds the checkout_confirmation page loads.

I had a bit of think about it, and found some code that creates a popup like this;

I plugged this into a HT module, so it is a super simple installation…just upload, turn on and configure appropriately (text message, colour of graphic bar etc). DONE! NO CODE CHANGES!

…very nice and very good for UX especially after having customers put in their card details. Not a time you want to be putting doubt in their minds…

As a developer rather than a shopowner…I would never have thought about something like this. Yet something so very simple can add a pleasing experience to the Customer.

Product Tags (aka Keywords)

If you’ve been following my efforts to keep osCommerce alive, you’ll know that I coded (into the core) a system that allows Shopowner to easily maintain an “internal search engine” based around the concept of tagging products with a number of keywords. The idea behind the system is to allow other words (not in the product name/description) to be searched for using the advanced_search.php.

A typical example might be;

Product Name: Coca Cola
Product Description: A lovely refreshing drink.

Scenario: person searches for “Coke”.
Result: nothing found.
Solution: Shopowner adds a Tag “Coke”.

Now the product can be found in the search facility. It was brought to my attention that I never coded a way for product tags to be shown on the product_info page.

Introducing the all new Tags module

With this simple upload…turn on…forget module, any product that has tags will display them. The label colour is configurable, the icon is changable and each tag links directly to advanced_search_result.php so that customer can easily find other products with the same tag.

Easy Slider for Index Page

I’ve coded up a new Slider system for the Front Page of any Responsive osCommerce. This Slider system takes as many “items” as you add, and sets them out as a multi-carousel, so let us imagine you have 8 items, and you select that each item takes 25% width (3 columns), it will show the first 4, along with prev/next buttons…to show the next 4, and so on.

On the Shop Side – WITH NO CORE CHANGES!

On the Admin Side – all WITH NO CORE CHANGES!

you get a new link in the Tools Box

a new admin page for adding/editing/deleting slider items

a new module which creates the output on the shop side

Conclusion

A really nice system for (eg) linking to special areas of your osCommerce site or linking to other places on the net. All done via Simple Upload, turn on, insert items…done! NO CODE CHANGES AT ALL!!

Easy Stock Message

I’ve coded up a new system which allow you, shopowner, to easily update stock (in your admin) and then easily show stock in the shop-side, have a look;

Admin Side

Three New pages and a new box;

1. Individual Updates
Click a products stock, update it, click anywhere else.

Notice that for easy reference, any product with less than 1 in stock is marked in red.

2. Multiple Updates
Update any number of stock, scroll down and press the button.

Notice that for easy reference, any product with less than 1 in stock is marked in red.

3. CSV Updates
Upload a CSV file, any product id that is in the CSV file is updated

In admin, you also get a new Box with links to these three new pages

Shop Side

1. Module for the Product Info Page
This is as explained at http://www.clubosc.com/oos-out-of-stock-module-for-product_info.html and this can be used to display a message and change the look/text of the buy button.

2. Core Code change for product listing module
Unfortunately you’ll need to add 1 line of code into the product listing module 🙁 Once done, it looks like this

You can see that we have no stock of “Microsoft Intellmouse Explorer”, so the button is changed to RED and “Back Order”. This could instead of Red, be changed to a disabled button or whatever shopowner needs…

Conclusion

A very simple way to extend the stock functions in osCommerce.

Business Schema

Did you ever search Google and find really interesting details about a Business, for example opening times and email addresses and so on. It looks a bit like this:

This is achieved by letting Google know more information about your business, which is most easily done by using “Schema“. In Responsive osCommerce I strived quite hard to add in “product” schema and that is working very well for a large number of shopowners, but that’s all about the Products and not about your Business…

AND SO…

Now I have an extension which adds in some more Schema markup. It is a Header Tag module and lists the following details: Type of Business, Name, Image, Opening Hours, Price Range, Payment Methods, Telephone, Email, URL, Address – more can be added as needed…

Installation

Very easy. Upload 2 files via FTP. Enter Admin and turn on the new Module. Insert Parameters and press save.

Benefit

Allows Google to better understand your business.

Mailchimp Dashboard

This new module allows you to see at a glance the number of subscribers in your list, the last send date and the number of subscribers you have gained/lost since that last send.

It looks like this:

It is a Dashboard module for osCommerce admin, so it installs very easily – simply upload it, turn it on, and insert your parameters (in this case, your Mailchimp API Key and List ID):

Spotlight Special

Super cool idea today from a long-standing osC client. He wanted a way to select a product from his range of products on special offer, and then to “showcase” that chosen product on the front page of his site.

Thankfully this client is pretty up to date so is using the Responsive osCommerce version which has the modular index page. So, making this a stand alone module was a simple affair. Here’s how it turned out;

The first step is, as always, upload the new files using FTP. This does not overwrite anything…now enter admin and;

Choose a Spotlight

Once the spotlight is chosen and the other parameters are set up;

Showing on the front page of the site

Pretty cool!

I made it so that when the box is mouseover’d, the “saving” shows

Let me know your thoughts? This is a pretty cool little module. Of course, you can easily change the look of the spotlight by amending its template file appropriately…it is only limited by your imagination.

Sticky Mini Navbar

I often get inspiration from the most unlikely of sources. Today a spammer signed up at the osCommerce Forum and I followed the link back to his site (which is powered by Magento). One particular part of this guys site stood out for me, and that is a “sticky” navigation bar, which has two main components;

On the left hand side: “Got Questions? Contact Us”
On the right hand side: “X items in cart Checkout”

The reason why I liked this is because it is always in the face of the shopper. A particular problem of Responsive design is to allow a theme to easily be used by a range of devices from tiny phones to large desktops…this sticky navbar solved what I perceive as a problem. Here’s a screenshot of what I’ve come up with:

This navbar stays open all the time even at XS size. This means that it is easy to find at all times for the person who has questions or wants a quick and easy way to checkout (rather than search for the elusive checkout button)…

There are NO CORE CODE CHANGES. Simply upload, go into Admin and install. DONE!

Content Module: Manufacturers Sliding Carousel

The next module on offer is my Manufacturers Sliding Carousel which is Content Module for your homepage. This module takes your manufacturer icons and links them to each manufacturers page.

They are displayed in a sliding carousel, which is set up appropriately for you on initial install – but can be manually changed very easily. The Slider has nav-arrows (if you want them), nav-dots (if you want them), see below:

manfacturer_crawl

There are NO CORE CHANGES – simply upload, go into admin, turn on.

This is a nice way to show manufacturers without taking up too much real estate.

Dashboard Module: New and Returning Customer

A nice dashboard showing new and returning customer Stats.
There are no core code changes, just upload it and turn it on!

costats-1

You can select the type of chart to display and how far back you want the stats to calculate.

costats-2

A new customer is defined as someone who first signed up to your shop inside the selected time frame.
A returning customer is defined as someone who first signed up to your shop before the selected time frame and signed in inside the selected time frame.

In the particular example above, this test shop has 1 new client and 1 returning client, hence the chart shows a 50/50 split.
